I just finished writing piece of firmware that controls Kompressor’s on-board GPS receiver. Kompressor uses a U-Blox ZOE-M8 GPS Receiver. I’m very pleased with the results. The system quickly gets an accurate 3D fix from cold start. I am using a inexpensive $9 antenna and easily seeing about 12 satellites indoors. I really like working with UBlox’s UBX binary protocol. It’s very simple and the documentation is really good. I choose to go with an active antenna PCB design because I figured that it can also be used with a passive antenna. I’m wondering why anyone would ever choose to go with passive antenna design. It is because the bias tee could possibly introduce noise from the power supply? Anyways, seems to work great!
